have all y’all seen this? cause if not, you need to see it.

It’s very very very easy to do.

or you’re just messing with someone’s favourite character

guys, i found the racist

No, you found a nerd. Most people don’t like it when you screw with established characters (race/ethnicity-wise, gender-wise, sexuality-wise, etc). They’d much rather you just create your own character/successor, like with Danica (the Flash of Justice League Beyond) or like Miles Morales (the current Spiderman). Because Clark Kent isn’t black. Bruce Wayne isn’t black. Diana Prince isn’t black. Create a black Wonder Woman or a black Superman, go ahead. It’d be cool. But don’t make it a ‘black Clark Kent’, because that’s a)not gonna fly, they’re established characters and b) erasing character’s identities just because you want ‘diversity’.

Screwing with established characters is not cool; creating your own characters/successors is very cool.

BRUH no. No. That is utter bullshit. I am a prime example. Since you want to generalize, I will too! Lol

I’m a big batman nerd. And I would love for there to be a Batman of color. WHY? Because people of color have barely ANY media representation. And as a person of color, AND an artist, I think that everyone should be able to draw/write a character the THEY want to. Wanna draw wonderwoman as a black woman? Go ahead. Wanna draw batgirl in a hijab? Go ahead. Wanna draw a male Catwoman? Do it! Wanna write a story about spiderman being queer? Do it!

An artist should be able to draw what they want. ALSO, movies and comics and movies and shit, are all open for anyone’s interpretation. So cut that bullshit out.

You know, I was going to let this go, since my response to this post happened nearly a year ago and I really wasn’t feeling up to an argument right now. But then I thought, ‘Nah.’

Look, if you’re a Batman fan, you know that the Batfam is one of the most diverse superhero families in the entire comics community, DC, Marvel, or otherwise (largely because very few of them are connected by blood). Half of the Core Batfam is either non-white or grew up in a non-privileged setting (Jason and Steph grew up poor and/or homeless, and Dick grew up provided for but not rich by any means), nearly half of the whole Batfam is non-white, and over half of them are women.

If you’re a Batman fan, you’ll know that Dick Grayson, who is Romani (or at the very least has Romani heritage), was Batman for nearly 5 years, with Damian Wayne as his Robin (himself biracial, white/Arabic). You’ll know that Cassandra Cain, an Asian, was the first Batgirl to carry the Batgirl solo book (and carried it successfully for nearly 7 years). You’ll know that she was disabled, functionally mute and illiterate for a long time. You’ll know that Barbara Gordon, the first Batgirl, had far more character development and did far more to the superhero community as Oracle, as a paraplegic, than she ever did as Batgirl.

You’ll know that Tim Drake, the third Robin, suffers from depression after Bruce’s death, that Dick was raped (although the handling of it was utterly terrible), that both Cassandra and Damian were raised to be assassins and had to overcome their toxic upbringing, that Jason suffers from mental illness as well, most notably PTSD. Steph was a teenage single mother.

You’ll know that we’ve had at least three Batgirls that were not white (Cass, Nissa, Tiffany Fox), two Robins who were visibly not white (Damian and Duke Brown), Helena Bertinelli (a light-skinned Italian), two Batwings (David Zavimbe—the ‘Batman of Africa’, or rather, of the Dem. Rep. of the Congo—and Luke Fox), Bilal Asselah (Nightrunner, a Sunni Muslim, the ‘Batman of Paris’), freaking Renee Montoya (The Question), and Kate Kane, a Jewish lesbian (Batwoman).

And I’m completely ignoring the ridiculous number of villains that are not white (Lady Shiva, Ra’s Al Ghul and family, The Falcones, Bane, and others).

Get off your high horse about diversity and represntation in the Batfam; you’ve got it, and they’re adding more every year.

But more than that, you missed the entire point of my reply: I am not saying that you cannot have a Batman that is not white; on the contrary, I very clearly said that it would be cool to have a Batman that was not white. What I said was that it was stupid, revisionist, and erasure to erase an established character’s identity for diversity. Create your own damn characters. Sure; draw a Batgirl who wears a hijab. But don’t make Barbara, Cass, or Steph wear a hijab, because they’re not Muslim.

You are also doing the ‘the only actual ‘PoC’ is black’ thing that a lot of tumblr-ites do. Diana/Wonder Woman is already non-‘white’; she’s Greek. What you’re saying is ‘she’s not dark enough for me,’ she’s not dark enough to count. People say this about characters like Helena Bertinelli too (a light-skinned Italian). It’s bullshit. Race in Europe does not function like race in the United States; it’s a sliding scale of whiteness. While Eastern Europeans and people like the Greeks and Italians are still ‘white’ and in the US they’re considered to be white, they have experienced and still experience a lot of discrimination and racism for being ‘less white’ than Northern/Western Europeans. Not to mention the rampant racism against people like the Irish and the Polish.

You’re also ignoring we already have a black Wonder Woman. We also have a black Superman.

Say hello to the Justice League of Earth-23, starring Kalel/Kalvin Ellis as Superman and Nubia as Wonder Woman. Actually, most of the superheroes of Earth-23 are black. And we also already have a genderswap League, the League of Earth-11.

We also already have a black Flash: her name is Danica Williams.

That’s kind of the whole point of alternate universes and/or creating new characters: you can do what you want, create new (diverse) characters and new storylines without taking away from the old and without screwing over established characters and their identities. You don’t need a black Clark Kent or a black Bruce Wayne; you need new characters with their own backstories and personalities. That’s the entire concept of a legacy character, something that has been absolutely vital to the DC Universe for decades.

An artist can do what they want, true, but again, that’s not the point. Continuity is important, especially in a medium that relies so heavily on it. Comics depend on continuity and stability in backstories, appearances (relatively speaking), and personalities. It’s part of the foundational nature of the medium. Stop saying that continuity isn’t important, because it is. Official racebending of a character (not a superhero mantle) erases continuity and part of that character’s identity. I don’t care whether you’re racebending Bruce Wayne black, Cassandra Cain hispanic, or David Zavimbe white; it’s wrong and idiotic to racebend a character officially. Fanart is one thing; official racebending is quite another.

Wanna bet these people didn’t buy Mighty Avengers?  A team consisting of Blade, Falcon, Photon, Power Man and White Tiger.  The only white dude on the team was Spider-Man, and that was only briefly.

Oh, but lest we forget ANGR’s abysmal sales, right?  Or Journey into Mystery with Sif?  Or what about Static in the first wave of the Nu52?  Or Demon Knights?  Or nearly every comic like that.

You people just fucking bitch about the comics.  You don’t buy them when they try to fix it.  You expect OTHER people to buy it, rather than put your money where your mouth is.

Guess what?  If you want to have these kinds of characters actually fucking exist, support them with your own hard earned money.  But no, we keep getting these books and they keep dying because nobody buys them.  Actually, correction, WHITE PEOPLE buy them.  I have heard more lamentations about Journey into Mystery from white dudes than I have women.  I constantly hear grudging fucking anger over Demon Knights being cancelled from white guys because it was a good book.

No, keep buying fucking shlock like Captain Marvel.  That’ll make you feel good, even though it won’t fucking help in the slightest.
